  • Kirk Schroder, Lisa Ross Moorefield introduced the fund, goals, asked our help in spreading the word, for volunteers and financial help
  • Goal is to make our area a leader in Science/Math education. Has endorsement from both School boards. Private fund, non-profit with goal to recruit and train quality teachers, close the achievement gaps, improve math/science strategies
  • Current initiatives. CQuest – targeting low-income families with college admissions help; Housing credits for new teachers; Odyssey 2025;
  • Summer Academy In planning stages to start academy for rising 5th graders in 2008 as learning lab for Math/Science curriculum enhancement. ½ way to goal with fundraising for this academy.
  • Request for help. Looking for volunteers, and most importantly, help with raising funds to achieve these goals. Do we know anyone who would like to give to this cause? http://edfundca.org/ for more information

Review of Budget Issues & Priorities by Dr. Pam Moran

  • Going to be a difficult year. Shrinking revenue projections are going to require reductions if we keep to our goals of competitive salaries AND continued classroom focus.
  • Parent Council success story. PC pressure helped influence County to improve teacher salaries. County now ranks in top 20% of VA school divisions. We compete with counties like Louden/Fairfax who have high tax bases & cost to compete advantages.
  • Current shortfall gap and challenges explained
  • Goal is to increase salaries by 4.3% this year, which means a $7 million increase in budget.
  • Only expecting $2.3 million from county as additional revenue. Not expecting much help from state.
  • Challenge is how to address this $4 million gap.
  • Efficiency Study results will be presented on Dec. 6, and discussed by School Board on Dec. 13 at 6:30 PM
  • Budget Planning Information Online. See http://www.k12albemarle.org/board/budget for more information

JABA Volunteer Opportunities

  • Pat Severson presented JABA’s FISH program to recruit and train senior volunteers to help in schools. Need more volunteers from the retirement community. Please help recruit volunteers. Contact pseverson@jabacares.org for more information.
