                                                                                   Diantha McKeel –ACPS School Board                                                                      

1.    Diantha McKeel member of he ACPS School Board expressed gratitude from the School Board to the entire Parent Council.  She stated the Parent Council offers a critical communication tool that assists with more than support for the annual budget.  She thanked all for their hard work and dedication. 

Bruce Benson-Assistant Superintendent

1.       Bruce Benson, Assistant Superintendent also expressed his thanks to the Parent Council for its ongoing work.  He stated that having an opportunity to obtain feedback and direct communication was extremely valuable.

2.       A survey is currently underway to obtain the views of community members and parents/guardians.  The survey seeks to determine the overall level of satisfaction with the school system and its services.  The survey also asks about the perceived benefits of small schools which will be used in the upcoming Southern Feed Master Plan.  Eventually, these results will be incorporated in long range planning throughout the division. 

3.       The survey is available online and copies are available in each school Office until May 15th.

4.       Parent Council representatives are asked to share the survey availability with their school communities, and written notice was included in the recent personal property tax bills. 

5.       The results will be collected through May 15th.  On May 18th a Teletown Hall meeting will be held during which time, information from the survey will be shared and questions taken concerning the Master Planning for the school division.  The final recommendations will be given to the School Board in August.  The goal is to balance community preferences with the Board’s fiscal responsibilities while providing the best learning opportunities for our students.


Becky Fisher- ACPS Ast. Dir. Of Information Management & Technology

1.   Becky Fisher discussed the growing impact and uses of technology in the public schools.  Approximately 86% of the public school students have access to computers and internet access.  The school division is addressing ways to increase access. 

2.  Ms. Fisher discussed the concept of crowd sourcing, currently being used in Wikipedia in which the crowd, or group of students would write, view, correct and edit information, and the need this raises to change our approach to teaching techniques.  She also discussed the ability of students at a very young age to understand and grasp skiping, or video web phones. 

3.   The Instructional Coaching Model will be primarily responsible for helping the separate schools to develop and apply the new technologies.  Additionally each school will have one staff member with a stipend to assist with technology integration.

4.   At the high school level, Flex books will be used for Physics textbooks this coming school year.  These are self-contained units that do not require technological support at home, making it available to all students.

5.   Becky is available to meet with PTO groups to discuss the usage and safety of the changing technology in our students’ lives.

Discussion For The Good And Welfare Of All

1.     Jane Kulow (Murray Elementary) was unanimously and enthusiastically elected President of the Parent Council for the 2009-2010 school year. 

2.     Mary Huffard discussed the desire to have additional members work with the Executive Committee which needs to have representation from all feeder patterns and all levels of schools.  Those interested should contact Mary Huffard at 

3.     The meeting dates for next years PC meetings have been scheduled.  PC members should share these dates with PTO and Principals as soon as possible for planning purposes. 

4.     Strategic Planning focus groups are being planned for Fall 2009.  The groups will be co-hosted by Parent Council, PTOs and the Superintendent’s office.  Parent Council members should share these dates with school communities as soon as possible.  The PTOs of the individual schools where the Focus Groups are scheduled will co-host the focus groups and will be responsible for providing refreshments and ensuring attendees.  The Superintendent and the School Board will receive the information discussed during the focus groups for consideration as they develop the ACPS Strategic Plan.
