Thursday, Jan. 13:  Regular School Board Meeting at 6:30 pm, Lane Auditorium, COB
The agenda is available for viewing on the Electronic School Board
At the Dec. 9th meeting, the School Board discussed at length how the Board would fill (or not) the vacant Rivanna district seat; topics discussed included the cost and timing of special elections, interim appointments, use of tie breaker, etc. This discussion is on the agenda for Thursday night’s meeting; the legal background for the discussion has been compiled into the attached pdf. [Please note: this can be found on the ESB, attached to item 8.7]

Wednesday, Jan. 19:  Superintendent’s Budget Presentation at 6:00 pm, Lane Auditorium, COB
Dr. Moran will present the ACPS funding request to the School Board; the presentation provides insight into the decisions behind the funding request.

Wednesday, Jan. 19:  Panel Discussion:  School Boards:  Are They For You? from 7 – 8:30 pm at the Burley Middle School Media Center. The description below comes from the co-sponsors.

The Sorenson Institute for Political Leadership, Sorenson’s Charlottesville regional alumni and the League of Women Voters are co-sponsoring this panel discussion as part of the Community Celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr.

School Boards: Are They for You?

Tom Smith, former Fluvanna County school superintendent; Leah Puryear, chair of Charlottesville's School Board; Brian Wheeler, former Albemarle County School Board member; and Virginia School Boards Association director Barbara Coyle will discuss how to be a positive force, an activist, or a school board member; and how to run for a school board. There will be sufficient time for questions from the audience.

The event is set for Wednesday, Jan. 19, from 7:00--8:30 p.m. at the media center of Burley Middle School at 901 Rose Hill Drive in Charlottesville.

If you are interested in participating in your community, attending school board meetings or running for a school board, come join us for this important discussion. There will be at least three vacant seats on both the Charlottesville School Board and Albemarle County School Board in 2011. We encourage you to attend this lively community discussion about education.
